Description: Discussion of written science fiction and fantasy.

Fantasy with actual Celtic druids?
Where are the druids, in written fantasy? And I mean *real* druids; not hippie tree-huggers that call themselves druids and happes to know the exact same spells as D&D says that druids know. Druids in historical fantasy would make the most sense, but non-historical fantasy is welcome as well. I tried English Wikipedia, and finally managed to find a list-of-druids,... more »

S. Delage
Two references: 1. The title character in Gene Wolfe's short story "Suzanne Delage". 2. The character Siuzan Delage in Adam Robert's novel _Land of the Headless_. No coincidence, I think. Certainly one can see parallels: they are both women whom the respective narrators are, well, confused about.... more »

What happened to the Forehand children ?
The following contains minor spoilers on Pohl's "Gateway". On page 225 (of ISBN 978-1-85798-818-5) we learn that Willa Forehand has been posted dead because she has been out too long and their rations must have run out by now. On page 228 we are reminded that Lois Forehand is still out. On page 278 Louise Forehand has returned with a rich find to her waiting... more »

_Peregrine: Primus_ and the Christian Empire
I was kind of surprised recently, on finally picking up a used copy of the mass-market paperback in the US of Avram Davidson's _Peregrine: Primus_ (I've always been put off by the blurb), to find it fairly frank about the theocratic brutality of the Christian Empire that succeeded the Roman Empire-- "Halt, stranger! does the Holy Spirit proceed by or through the... more »

on later asimov
Given the recent talk of Asimov's Foundation universe hereabouts and a dearth of anything else jumping off the shelf insisting I read it, I am 80 or so pages into Forward the Foundation. Something occurred to me that seems at odds with how I see most writers progress. ISTM that early writers resort to 'action-hero' mode rather than a... more »

YASID space opera courier and monks
I'm blanking on the title of a book I read within the past year. 1. Humanity is spread over numerous planets, but the AI ships that keep the cohesive "empire" together are aging and failing. Humans have lost the ability to build new ones. This is due in part to technology being out of favor after brutal techo-dictatorships of the past.... more »
